Rapids and Float Notes

The river runs through scenic valleys and has clear, clean water. It’s really a delight to float and is best done in a canoe or kayak. A raft is suitable for much of the river as well and some people tube short stretches in the summer months. The river does have rocks, shallow gravel bars, logs and bridges. Always be aware of these obstacles while paddling or rowing along.

Battenkill River Shuttles

You won’t find a ton of options for shuttle specific services here. Self supported shuttles are always ideal but there are a few good options in the valley.

Battenkill Valley Outdoors – is running trips on the river all summer and they might offer a shuttle. They offer boat rentals and custom trip options. Give them a call at 518 677-3311 or 866 677-3311.

Fishing the River

Up high in the Green Mountains of Vermont, the Battenkill river has some great fishing for native brook trout. As it grows in volume, you will find pocket water, riffles and classic runs. Brown trout begin to dominate the middle and lower river sections.

Some of the brown trout are stocked and others are wild or holdovers. The wild ones can get very large but they are not easy to find or catch. You really need to put in time and learn the river to find these big boys.

Overall there is some great fishing and fly fishing to be had in both Vermont and New York. It’s a scenic river system with clean water and healthy habitat. Worth the trip for any angler.
